Panga longliners started about 1985 when about 200 permits were issued in Manzanillo for shark. The by catch of sailfish and dorado was about 90% of the total catch.
Off the Coast of Manzanillo the panga longliners started working with 4 kilometer longlines in 1985. The permits were for shark, but they quickly realized that fishing during the day on the surface for sailfish and dorado was much easier and profitable. Within the year they were landing between 150 and 200 tons of sailfish fillets monthly in the part of Manzanillo and an unknown amount of dorado. By the early 1990s the average size of the sailfish was decreasing significantly and by 1995 the number of fish caught had decreased and the average weight of the remaining fish was down from 60 kilos to about 40 kilos.
This panga longline fishery had over 700 boats working it by the late 1980s and along the coast of Sinaloa and Sonara 100s of tons of dorado and sailfish were landed daily. During this period between 80 and 100 tons of doarado were landed each day in Guaymas.
